Project Titan, the $210 million Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility expansion at Pensacola International Airport, has hit a tremendous milestone in the construction phase.

Construction crews from Brasfield & Gorrie recently held a “topping out” lunch reception to honor the hundreds of workers whose tireless efforts have contributed to the completion of the exterior of the facility.  A “topping out” ceremony is a celebration of the last beam, or its equivalent, being placed atop a structure during its construction.

“The journey to this construction milestone has required complex efforts and coordination, including the critical lifts to raise the 640-foot-long, 865,000-pound box beam and the 600-foot-long, 400,000-pound step beam,” Vice President and Division Manager Michael Tortorici said. “Because of our history with aviation and aerospace, Brasfield & Gorrie is experienced in coordinating the intricate details required for this project. But it wouldn’t be possible without our field forces and the support of Greenhut Construction, our trade contractors, and the Pensacola International Airport. We’re grateful for their collaboration.”

This transformational project is funded by multiple grants including Triumph Gulf Coast, Governor’s Job Growth Grant Fund, the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the Florida Department of Transportation, and in partnership with the City of Pensacola, Escambia County and ST Engineering.

“The roof completion moves most of the construction activities indoors and out of the weather. This will help keep the project on track for occupancy in November,” said Ken Ibold, Assistant Airport Director – Planning and Engineering. “Plus, it marks the point at which the heavy construction activities start winding down and the trades workers focus on fitting out the interior.”

After completion, Project Titan is expected to provide 1,325 new, high-paying jobs in the aviation and aerospace sector.
