Hello Friends,

We trust that you are indulging in a pleasant and safe summer as we head into the Fourth of July holiday weekend. From the P1 Offshore Sarasota Grand Prix to the Fireworks Spectacular at Bayfront Park, it will be a vigorous weekend. (Information on these events is listed in the newsletter below.) Let’s relish the festivities and remember why we celebrate. We are blessed to live in a remarkable country where freedom, liberty and opportunity ring daily.

On Tuesday, July 5, the City Commission will resume its regular meeting schedule after a summer hiatus that has swirled with activity. We gathered on Memorial Day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation. We celebrated the federal holiday Juneteenth, which recognizes the end of slavery in the United States, with a convivial block party in Newtown. The historic Leonard Reid house was relocated from the Rosemary District to Newtown, where preparations are underway to transform it into Sarasota’s first African American Cultural Center. Commissioner Brody hosted a very informative and well-attended Affordable Housing Town Hall (if you missed it, watch a video replay here). The City seal redesign contest was brought to a close, with nearly 175 unique designs submitted. The City Commission is scheduled to receive a presentation in August. Without a moment to spare, government has been tirelessly working behind the scenes: A demolition permit for the 100-year-old Mira Mar Plaza building on Palm Avenue was denied by the Historic Preservation Board and is being appealed to the City Commission. Finally, six candidates qualified for the two at-large City Commission seats, and we look forward to witnessing their innovative ideas pass the test of the public eye.

It has been a busy month, and we have a host of objectives left to meet as we strive every day to make Sarasota the best city in the world. But first, let’s take time to celebrate the birth of our nation. Happy Fourth of July, and God bless America!

July 4 Events & Holiday Hours

Sarasota will celebrate the Fourth of July with a splash this weekend as we host some exciting special events. First, the P1 Offshore Sarasota Grand Prix returns for its 37th year. The fun will kick off with a block party from 6-10 p.m. tonight (Friday, July 1) on Gulfstream Avenue between Cocoanut Avenue and McAnsh Square in downtown Sarasota.

Then on Saturday and Sunday, you’re invited to check out the spectacle of powerboat races speeding just offshore at Lido Beach. There will also be a "Racing Village" with vendors, food trucks, live music and more.

And on Monday, the Bayfront Fireworks Spectacular will light up the night sky starting at 9 p.m. at Bayfront Park.

We’re expecting big crowds and lots of traffic on the roads for these popular holiday events, so you might want to consider parking your car in one of the City’s three public garages and hopping on the free Bay Runner trolley or renting a Veo scooter or bike for a fun and stress-free experience getting around town.

City administrative offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday, as will many of our recreational facilities, including Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex, Lido Pool, Payne Park Tennis Center and the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex.

There will be no residential garbage, recycling or yard waste pickup on Monday for City customers. Monday collections will be shifted to Tuesday, and Tuesday pickups will occur on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday collections will not be interrupted. For questions or more info, contact our Solid Waste Division at 941-365-7651 or visit the Solid Waste page on our website.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!

Pandemically Yours,
