Delray Beach Public Library The Next Chapter - October 4, 2022

From: Delray Beach Public Library
October 7, 2022

Good afternoon, dear library friends!

This week I thought I’d bring you another installment in my “Great Librarians” series of profiles. This week we have the great science fiction writer, Andre Norton, as our subject. Ms. Norton is of particular interest to us with Banned Books Week so recently behind us. Allow me to explain:

Andre Norton, who is now considered the “Grand Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy, was born Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio in 1912. When the Great Depression hit, Ms. Norton found a job at the Cleveland Public Library, starting in 1932 in the children’s section. She remained with the library for 18 years, during which time she began publishing science fiction short stories and novels (the first one, The Prince Commands, was published in 1934). It was during these early years of publication that Alice Mary changed her name to “Andre.” It was felt at the time that the audience for science fiction was strictly teenage boys who were more likely to buy books under a masculine name.

“Science fiction magazines were considered by many to be so trashy that a person would not want to be seen with them in public,” she has said.

What makes Ms. Norton so appropriate a profile this week (so close in the wake of Banned Book Week) is, like most librarians at one time or another, she fought for the inclusion of challenged books:

About this issue, Ms. Norton was quoted as saying; “Each month the librarians would receive a book to review. If there was some objection to the book and we still wanted it, we would have the opportunity to defend it. I remember getting the challenged book The Hobbit and nobody had heard of Tolkien, I had to argue for it like mad!”

Good on you, Librarian Andre Norton!

Andre Norton was the first woman to be Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, to be SFWA Grand Master, and was the first woman inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She passed away in 2005.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, please let me know. And, as always, be safe, well-read, and happy.

Snips, Snaps, Tales and Tunes is a fun and creative program for ages 3-5 years and children first hear a story from Ms. Lovely and then do a book related craft. This is a great way to create the joy of reading as the child experiences a fun story in a social environment, learns to recognize words, and associates the pictures with actions and emotions described in the story. The following activity strengthens the concepts the child is learning and builds hand and eye coordination. Ms. Lovely awaits your participation in this “lovely” program!

Mr. Kevin, our Space Camp extraordinaire got children involved in critical thinking about space travel, the importance and need for it, the logistics involved and led them through a rocket challenge on a simulation program in which children get to build their personalized rocket and blast it into space! This content rich program keeps children at the edge of their seats with excitement and they learn so much in the process. Thank you, Mr. Kevin!
