Fort Walton Beach Library Newsletter - October 2023

Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October to celebrate the contributions of women to STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). It's named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. Starting in 2009, events have featured initiatives relating to equity, diversity, and inclusion that provide spaces for discussion about how unconscious biases function to create barriers to women's participation and advancement in the fields of STEM.

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is on October 11th. The first decades were marked by private and public comings out, often in the media, to raise awareness. In recent years, the day has been more of a holiday since coming out is less risky in most Western countries. Participants often wear pride symbols such as rainbow flags. The Human Rights Campaign offers resources to individuals and allies to LGBT families living open lives.
