Message from Library Director Pamela Monroe

As summer vacations start to wind down and we prepare the kiddos for returning to school, here are just a few things YOUR public library has to offer for the new school year.

Homework Hub - Starting back up in September, Homework Hub is our in-person and virtual tutoring program for kindergarten to eighth grade students.

Book the Teen Lab for Your Home School Group - Our Teen Lab at the Main Library includes 12 computers, a glass writing board, and two 82-inch televisions, where home school leaders can teach, have students do presentations, and use library resources. Booking is a breeze with a valid library card.

Online Research at Your Fingertips - Writing a paper and Googling won't do? Use your library card to access databases including EBSCO, Gale, and the Florida Electronic Library.

Volunteer Opportunities - Our Teen Advisory Board is always looking for volunteers. This active group helps plan library programs and gives a fresh teen perspective on how the library can support them personally and academically.

Check Out a Book - This post wouldn't be complete without a reading suggestion. There are MANY titles, genres, and formats available for all ages to choose from. Try our Book Nook Bundles for early literacy, Sunshine State Young Readers Award winners for elementary and middle school, and our young adult section is bursting with new titles that will keep the young and young at heart immersed all year long.

No matter the season, the Leon County Public Library is here for you with helpful staff, fun and engaging programming for all ages, and plenty of resources to help you learn. Stay informed about the great new things happening at your public library by following us on Facebook and Instagram

Amazing things are happening!

The Fall Seed Library kicks off on Saturday, August 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Leon County Main Library. Choose from 10 seed varieties to build your fall garden, participate in educational activities, and learn how to create a successful home garden.

Starting August 19, visit any library branch location and check out up to five seed packets per month using your library card, or three packets per month without a library card, while supplies last. Don't have a library card or need a replacement? Register online for a library card today.

Celebrate our fifth annual CosmicCon in the world of fantasy, comics, and fandoms! On Saturday, August 26, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., CosmicCon will be at all library locations with hands-on activities, a Beanstack reading challenge, book displays, and more. Join the fun and cosplay as your favorite character.

Book Nook Bundles are now available at all Leon County Public Library locations. Created in partnership with the Florida Center for Reading Research, the Bundles contain a story book, a story book guide, and a relevant and engaging activity that bring caregivers and children together to build early literacy skills. Bundles can be reserved online and picked up from any library location.

Support early literacy skills and help prepare the child in your life for school by taking part in Leon County Public Library's 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading challenge on Beanstack. Read books together and earn prizes for milestones along the way!

Help students in kindergarten through eighth grade with their assignments by volunteering for Homework Hub! This after school volunteer opportunity assists students with their homework in one-on-one sessions and is available in person at the Leon County Main Library and Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library or virtually via Zoom. Check out all of the library's volunteer opportunities online.

Are you ready to become a library book super user? By using the Interlibrary Loan Borrowing System (ILLiad), you can suggest purchases directly to the library or request to borrow print books from another library if we don’t carry them. This is a great way for us to get feedback on the types of books our community wants to read, and it gives you access to even more books we don’t own. To use ILLiad, you will need to create an account, which is different from your library account. If you already have an ILLiad account, you can simply log in. The form is the same for suggesting a purchase or requesting a book, and you will select which option you’re requesting.
