Lakeland - Colt Creek State Park

16000 State Rd 471

The park offers over 12 miles of beautiful, multi-use trails which make for great horse-back riding, hiking and biking opportunities. These trails meander through the pine flatwoods around cypress domes, bottomland forest and past open pastures. Three tributaries flow through the park including Little Gator Creek, Gator Creek and the park's namesake Colt Creek.

Camped here, so only commenting on the camping portion. The rangers were super friendly. The price to camp was reasonable, we did primitive camping. The "primitive" sites have power and water and are next to the RV sites. Nice clean restroom facility with showers. The camp site has side walks of concrete to the handicapped camp sites, gravel walkway to the rest. Set up your tent on the gravel which sounds weird but it removes the sand/dirt which gets in the tent at a normal camp site. Really enjoyed it here.

OVERALL: This campsite is brand new and VERY nice. The bathrooms have showers and are very clean. Unlike many other state and federal parks, rather than just not providing any way to sanitize or dry your hands, they've got soap at the sinks and even electric hand dryers! I was quite impressed. The camp host was very nice and even delivered the firewood we purchased. THE CAMPSITE: Brand new. They provide a handicap site! Having been handicapped once in my life before, I thought this was a very nice touch. Each campsite is far enough away from the other that you're not sleeping tent wall to tent wall. Each site has a nice gravel pad to set your tent up on. I cannot say for all sites, but at least the handicap site has water and power. WHAT I LOVED: They provide a washing machine and hot showers! WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: This is pretty hard to get away from, but you sure could hear the road at night. Loud and clear.

One of the better dealerships I have visited, and I have visited many. Not the biggest, not the biggest selection of bikes or clothes, but the staff is great. All areas were friendly and personable. No one was pushy with sales. As with many dealerships, free grub and suds on a fairly regular basis.

New to state park system. Very nice clean with big lots. Sites have water and electric. Sewer dump is the cleanest I have seen. Two primitive areas, equestrian and group. Lots of hiking, riding trail. Scenic, quiet. Great place for young families. A hike too far for us old folks. Reserve early, small number of sites, fills up quick.

Be aware, Beware. Water moccasin on the 10 mile trail. Just need to keep your eyes open as we have seen venomous snakes in most of Florida's state parks. Great new campground, 31 sites, 7 are tent, water and electricity. Very clean, very modern. BRING SUNSCREEN, SUNGLASSES!!! Not a lot of shade in the campground or trails. I wouldn't recommend this park in the summer, much like Lake Louisa campground. But WoW, definitely adding it to our weekend list.
